Home Emergency – Hygiene products
I’d like to start it off by talking about hygiene products. They’re common in all households and we use them every day. What hygiene products can we use in a home emergency?
First one would be tampons. You can use it as an improvised survival straw. The cotton applicator should be made from plastic and you will put it end down on the water and use the cotton of the tampon as a filter. You will suck on the other end like a straw and you can be sure the debris will be filtered out. The cotton from the tampon can also be used as bandage for wounds and cuts. It can be handy when you have nothing else to use as bandage.
Next would be dental floss. Just grab a branch, fashion a hook, and tie it with dental floss and viola, you have a fishing pole. You can also make a rope by braiding several strands of floss together. You’d be surprised how strong a dental floss can be. If you need to start a fire, you can make a bow drill by using floss as cordage to spin the stick back and forth.
Third would be condoms. Alright children, you may stop giggling now. Condoms have a lot of uses in a home emergency. You can use it as a crude rubber glove in case you need to handle wounds or any infection. It can also be used as a makeshift tourniquet. Another purpose would be water storage.
Home Emergency – Socks and Pantyhose
Socks can be used as a self defense weapon. Just put some rocks, coins, or anything heavy in it and wield it like a flail. Use it as bandage and as a makeshift tourniquet as well. Socks can be used as a water filter. Even if your socks are as dirty and smelly, the fabric of socks can make a fine pre-filter to assist other disinfection methods.
Pantyhose can be used as water filters and may be even better than socks. Since pantyhose are made of nylon or synthetic fabrics, the weave is much more tighter and can filter out more sediments. It can also be used as emergency cordage. Like dental floss, you can also use pantyhose for fishing by making an improvised skimmer net.
Home Emergency – Lipstick and Lip Balm
Lipstick and lip balm are great fire starters. Lipstick and lip balm are made of petrolatum or petroleum jelly which is flammable. You can also use them to lubricate zippers that are stuck. That’s useful not just in a home emergency situation. Lip balm was of course made to prevent chapped lips, but lipstick can be used for that purpose as well. Even though it’s main purpose is color enhancement, lipstick contains moisturizers, and many contain sunscreen. I’m sure you want to look pretty during a survival situation.
Home Emergency – Survival Items are Everywhere
Once again, I’d like to you to look to your left. Now look to your right. I don’t know where you’re reading this right now but I’m assuming you can see some everyday survival items lying around. It’s amazing how these innocuous items can be used in a home emergency or survival situation. There are plenty more everyday items that we can use as survival items.
